Book: Architecture in Sabah: Resorts & Hotels

An effort has now been made to document and showcase the architecture of Sabah’s guest accommodation facilities, in the form of a beautiful coffee-table book.  Malaysian Institute of Architects or Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM), Sabah Chapter launched its inaugural coffee-table book project entitled ‘Architecture in Sabah: Resorts and Hotels’ during its 34th annual dinner recently.  The book features 15 of Sabah’s selected tourist guest accommodation facilities, ranging from 5-star luxury resorts to budget backpacker lodges.  The book was written by Richard Nelson Sokial, who also shot most of the stunning images of resorts and hotels.

Book: Small Projects

Small Projects was born in 2002.  It was the book's name as well as the company's name.  Both are belong to Kevin Mark Low.  His work involves house, building and utility designs.  Kevin Mark Low returned to Malaysia and culture shocked after nine years in the west with a bachelor's and master's degree in architecture and a minor in art and architectural history.  Kevin has, over various periods in his life, been professionally involved in writing, environmental sculpture, illustrating, teaching and copy-writing.  He has presented papers on building technology at Harvard University and lectured in the architectural department at MIT.  While in the United States, Kevin worked in architectural practices both on the East and West coasts and studied closely with the Aga Khan Foundation, earning awards of research grants and fellowships to Italy, North Yemen, Spain and Bangladesh.  He joined GDP Architects upon his return to Kuala Lumpur where he stayed for the next eleven years, running the r&d and special projects division.  His work while at GDP Architects included project branding, budget hotels and high end condominiums, a refurbished warehouse for a corporate office, various housing types, guardhouses, garden memorials, mailboxes and master plans; the last one being the master plan for Sentul Kuala Lumpur.

This Handbook for PAM Contract 2006 was written by the authors of PAM 2006 suite of contracts to address these needs. PAM President Ar. Boon Che Wee in his Foreword to the Handbook said: “Drawing on their combined expertise gained in pursuit of their careers as active practitioners, the authors of PAM 2006 explain all clauses succinctly and when necessary, with reference to relevant case law decisions, illustrate the legal principles that have been used to shape PAM 2006.  Written in a style that has come to characterize their collaborative authorship, the narrative, including the cases cited and their interpretations are readily understood, and regardless of the complexity of the subject matter, the writing remains clear and easy to follow.”

Book: Colonial Townships in Sabah: West Coast

The Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) Sabah Chapter has once again launced a new book relating to Sabah Architectural History yesterday.  The 268 pages book entitled "Colonial Townships in Sabah: West Coast," sponsored by Colourcoil Industries Sdn Bhd and the City Top Enterprise Co. Ltd.  featuring selected 12 towns from the 1900s to the pre-independence days.

The selected towns are Weston, Beaufort, Membakut, Kimanis, Papar, Kinarut and Kota Kinabalu (Jesselton); building in these towns are erected alont the North Borneo railway line in the West Coast and it still has the influence of British colonial architecture from the perid 1881 to 1963.

The was written by a team formed by PAM Sabah Chapter in collaboration with the Sabahan architectural writer, Richard Nelson Sokial.
